Roles and Aims

 

Below are listed the Council and Church leadership positions currently in force or proposed in 2003 and the objectives of each.  These positions are either elected or appointed, and most change annually. 

President

Schedule and facilitate monthly church council meetings, executive committee meetings, prepare the annual budget, plan the annual congregational meeting, understand the working committees and their interaction, respond to general congregational concerns, and interface with church staff and the local synod.

Education

Provide Sunday School programs for preschool through high school, as well as the adult FAITH experience.  Also provide for a Vacation Bible School .  A specific goal is to investigate training for Sunday School teachers.  Coordinate with the Youth Director.

Property

Provide church property maintenance, upkeep, and repairs.  Specific goals for 2003 include the church sound systems, Fellowship Hall curtains, Sunday School rug, basement carpeting, office furniture, phone service upgrades, and storage area improvements.  Coordinate with the church custodian.

Worship & Music

To praise God, to identify and enhance worship needs within our congregation, to listen to ideas and opinions, to utilize volunteers, and to provide varied worship experiences.  The goals are to keep God as the central focus, encourage youth participation, communicate worship plans, and invite members to share their worship talents.  Coordinate with the church organist and music director.  Provide guest preachers as needed.

Social Ministry

Understand and help provide for the basic needs of others.  Specific goals for 2003 include:  Church Women United Peanut Butter Collection, ELCA World Hunger Appeal, CROP Walk, Blanket Sunday, Salvation Army Christmas Gift Program , Philadelphia House hot meals program (4th and 5th Mondays), Food Bank Sundy (3rd Sunday), Church Use for AA, Gabby's Ladder, etc. and support the Lutheran Social Services of Michigan (LSSM) by financial support of the Southeast Michigan Synod ELCA.

Youth

Plan and coordinate programs and outings for the various youth groups and their families that will provide a spiritual, educational, and enjoyable time for everyone.  Specific goals include promoting youth/adult interactions, conducting monthly meetings, reviewing the purpose and direction of the high school group, and instilling church pride in all youth members.  Coordinate with the Youth Director.

Stewardship

Plan stewardship initiatives, including time, talents, and funding.

Evangelism

Spread the word of God outside of our church family.  Specific goals include inviting people to visit (distribute fliers), make sure visitors are treated warmly, and to visit our visitors so that they feel welcome and encouraged to return.

Fellowship

Plan congregational fellowship activities including breakfasts, picnics, etc.

Congregational Care

Provide for the physical and spiritual needs within our church family.  A specific goal is to create two-person teams that would be responsible for making calls, visiting shut-ins, etc.

Communications

To keep the lines of communication open between the council and the congregation to enhance the worship experience and inform members of events.  Specific goals are to develop a new, or expanded, e-mail directory for speedy communication of sick, hospitalized, or home-bound members, and also to begin providing the monthly newsletter electronically.  A church e-mail list has been created.

Pastor

The pastor offers spiritual leadership and guidance to the congregation and greater community.  The pastor holds up the vision of the great communion of saints at every time and place.  He/she helps keep the congregational focus on ministry and service to our Lord and our Lord's people.
